Giveaway

Look it's my first giveaway!!  I'm excited and I can't even enter...

The giveaway is for this 'Dungbeetle' canvas bag - and who wouldn't want to put their shopping into a bag decorated with a ball of poo?

There might even be a couple of other insect related goodies tucked inside for the lucky winner.  All you have to do is leave me a comment (preferably with an insect related anecdote/fact/joke) and a winner will be chosen by the random method of a small child pulling numbers out of a hat (or more likely a bowl, but I'll leave the exact container a mystery for now...) on Friday 21st October.  How simple.

This is an insect giveaway though, so if you hate insects or have a phobia it may not be the giveaway for you...

MY GIVEAWAY HAS NOW ENDED - SORRY YOU MISSED IT!

What a gorgeous beetle with his ball of poo! I studied entomology in the dark ages (well it feels like that long ago since I was a student!) and so definitely not squeamish around insects. Here's a (semi-)interesting fact: there are no dung beetles in NZ. As we have no native mammals (except for a bat) no dung beetles were needed. Now we have loads of cows and sheep and some scientists think we should import dung beetles as there's a big job for them down here!

That is a smashing image.

As for insect stories all I can offer is my current minor unnerving situation.

On holiday earlier this year my traveling companion picked up some beautiful shiny almond nut cases. And she gave one to me as a souvenir of a grand day. And I put it on the living room window cill when we got home and can see it even now.

But at some point in the last few days something has burrowed out of it as there is now a small hole in it, and an equivalent pile of nut shell sawdust underneath it.

What the hell is at large in my house now ? Am having visions of Wrath of Khan things wriggling in my ear as I sleep.

Oh and can you tell your other half that I am STILL waiting for world of noses !

Poo on a bag! Who could ask for more? My children knew a few jokes about insects-here is one of the better ones...
What is green, sooty and whistles when it rubs its back legs together?
Chimney Cricket!

Hello! Insect fact - there are more kinds of beetle in the world than any other type of animal; over 250,000 world wide, 20,000 in Europe. Nearly 4,000 live in Britain.
I love your bag, what a fab giveaway.

No fact about insects other than we keep getting nits! Bloody school! x

I am not sure that I know much about insects but my 6 year old son just saw this and said "that he totally wants it for his library bag at school. It will be the coolest one!!"

Fingers crossed!

Lovely bag! We keep getting nits too. I was in the bath last week and came up with the idea of drowning them, so I lay in the bath with my hair underwater for about 20minutes, feeling very pleased with the idea of drowning them. Then I got out and Googled 'how long does it takes nits to drown'. Go, on guess..........

eight hours. :-(

I saw a small stick on the ground, that was glowing (I'd been working hard in the workshop and it was getting dark, so I thought I was seeing things), but when I bent down to pick it up, the glow stopped, and I couldn't see it. This happened a few times - then I did manage to scoop it up on a leaf and it was a centipede brightly fluorescing - complete magic!

I'd love to pop my name in the hat for your giveaway - what a fabulous bag. I think your design would surely appeal to people who had a slight phobia of insects, it's so lovely. x

just popped over from folksy, my son would love that bag. sorry can't think of any insect facts except to keep spiders away you are suppose to put conkers in your doorway (not quite sure how effective this is)

Thanks so much for all your comments everyone - I've LOVED having so many insecty facts (and horror stories) and might make it compulsory for all further commenting on my blog to include more facts...

Well done to Lizeylou!
